What is SMD LED? - TRALERT®

SMD is the abbreviation for Surface Mounted Device. In English it means surface mounted component. The SMD has a high light output and is widely used. The LEDs are soldered on a PCB. SMD are becoming more common because the components are much smaller. This results in more efficient PCB's with more components per surface. In LED lighting, SMDs are the sources of light. It's actually only used in modern industry.

Verschillende type SMD LED

The type 5050 is one of the best known SMD LED types. The SMD 5050 is a triple LED lights which produces three times as much light. The SMD 5050 can produce multiple colours of light with one LED. Only disadvantage is that they use three times as much energy. The type SMD 5050 provides a perfect mixture of colours and is therefore very suitable for LED strips. SMD 5050 has a light output between 16-22 lumens. The cheaper smaller LED lighting 3528 is a single chip LED and also consumes less energy. The 3528 LED lighting also has a lower light output and is a great choice for single colour LED strips. The 3528 has a light output between 16-22 lumens. The LED module 3014 is very compact, so that more LED's fit on one LED strip. The LED lighting 3014 has a light output between 10-13 lumens. If you compare it to the 3014, the5650 uses much more light output, namely between 40-55 lumens.

Benefits

Nowadays, the use of SMD has become the standard due to the cheaper production process. SMD has several advantages, namely

  • Less material consumption due to smaller components
  • Less waste in the production process
  • Improved electrical properties
  • More favourable heat properties, allowing better heat dissipation
  • Favourable features that take up less space, making electrical appliances smaller and more complex
